NL Schools Destroy Thousands of Books Over Inaccurate Indigenous Content, Sparking Political Inquiry – VOCM

Schools in Newfoundland and Labrador have destroyed thousands of books purchased a couple of years ago because they contain numerous inaccuracies about Indigenous history and culture.

A political leader is asking questions about how the government allowed the flawed materials to be put into circulation in the first place.

A committee which advises the Department of Education felt the resources did not accurately reflect the cultural reality in Newfoundland and Labrador.

For example, not all Indigenous communities have clan systems as a method of organization, elder is not age-based, and Turtle Island is not a creation story for all Indigenous peoples.
