Press Release
July 18, 2023
At about 3:10 p.m. yesterday, the Nain Volunteer Fire Department and the RCMP responded to an apparent fire at the Illusuak Cultural Centre in Nain. Staff and visitors inside the building at the time evacuated safely, with the majority attending to the Nain clinic for assessment and advice. One person continues to receive medical attention. All inquiries with respect to potential health impacts related to exposure to the fire suppression material should be directed to health officials.
Following an internal inspection last evening, there was no evidence to determine that a fire had broken out inside the building. What is known is that the facility’s fire suppressant system was engaged. The extent of the damages has yet to be determined, but power and internet services have been restored to the facility.
The Nunatsiavut Government sends its appreciation to the Nain Volunteer Fire Department for its quick response, as well as to the staff at the Nain clinic for acting in a professional and caring manner in dealing with those impacted by the incident.
An investigation will be carried out and a report will be issued once complete. There is no timeline on when the investigation will be completed.
