NT RCMP receive and review the independent police investigation into March 2020 Inuvik cell incident

The Northwest Territories RCMP has received and reviewed the independent outside police jurisdiction investigation into an incident which occurred in the cell block area of Inuvik RCMP Detachment.

The incident involved a female prisoner being taken into custody, on March 3, 2020.

After this incident was brought to the awareness of NT RCMP, NT RCMP Criminal Operations Officer, Superintendent Jeff Christie requested an outside police jurisdiction review the incident.

Alberta RCMP assigned two (2) investigators to lead the independent investigation.

NT RCMP Criminal Operations received the independent investigative report at the end of September 2021. After reviewing the independent investigation, based on their findings, the actions of the member are found to have been conducted in a reasonable manner. The investigation and review is being concluded with no further action recommended. The member involved in the incident remains on active duty serving the citizens of the Northwest Territories.

“We take any allegations that a person believes they have not been treated appropriately in any interaction with our officers as a most serious complaint. We are thankful to the time and effort the Alberta RCMP investigators dedicated to this independent investigation. We reiterate, if you do not believe you have been treated fairly in an interaction, please bring this forward to your local RCMP detachment”, Superintendent Jeff Christie.
