NWT Human Rights Commission launches survey – Cabin Radio

March 4, 2024

The NWT Human Rights Commission has launched a project aimed at better understanding the views of Indigenous people and new Canadians.

The human rights commission said Indigenous people and new Canadians are at higher risk of facing discrimination. It said the goal of the project is to understand how to better reach those groups with information about their rights and learn how the human rights process can be more accessible and meaningful to people who have faced discrimination.

“There is a pressing need for this human rights research project and its results because for a long time, Indigenous people in the NWT have often put up with discrimination, injustice and lack of equality rights,” Yacub Adam, deputy chair of the commission, was quoted as saying in a news release. “Their voices are often not heard or are unable to be heard. In recent times, this often applies to new Canadians too.”

The project includes a paid online survey and in-person discussion groups. To be eligible, people must be aged 18 years and older, live in Yellowknife, Dettah or Ndılǫ, and identify as Indigenous or were born outside Canada and have lived in the country for less than five years.

The commission said it is considering future projects to hear from people in other NWT communities.
