Oshawa committee vote for new name passed unanimously 6-0 on Monday; goes to full council for expected ratification June 24
Named originally for Upper Canada governor general Sir George Bagot who authored report on residential schools, move to change street name started in 2021.
An Oshawa street with a past tied to Canada’s residential schools has been renamed and reclaimed with a brand new Indigenous name.
Bagot Street, named for Sir George Bagot, one of the first governor generals of Upper Canada who initiated a report in 1844 calling for the introduction of residential schools, will now be called Debwewin Miikan.
The name, affirmed by a unanimous 6-0 vote at Monday’s economic and development services meeting in Oshawa is expected to pass unanimously at Oshawa council on June 24, making it official.
