On November 14th, 2024, Twenty-two Indigenous partners, alongside the federal and territorial governments and private philanthropists led by Pew Charitable Trusts, gathered in Behchokǫ̀ to celebrate a landmark achievement in conservation and reconciliation: the signing of the Northwest Territories (NWT) Project Finance for Permanence Agreement (NWT: Our Land for the Future Agreement). This agreement represents a transformative step toward long-term, Indigenous-led stewardship of Canada’s northern ecosystems.
A groundbreaking agreement: A milestone in Indigenous-led conservation
Through the OLT agreement, $375 million ($300 million from the federal government and $75 million from private philanthropic donors) have been committed to advance Indigenous-led conservation and conservation-related activities in the NWT. The OLT agreement supports cultural preservation and sustainable community development and shows the power of collaboration in addressing biodiversity loss and fostering reconciliation.
