Community asks, what if the solution is culture and not extraction?
The Ojibways of Onigaming don’t hold funerals in the school gymnasium anymore.
It was the only place in the First Nation that had enough space to hold everyone.
No one questioned it — until a student spoke up.
“We have a lot of students that are in school right now who have lost a parent or two parents or lost a grandparent or lost somebody really close to them,” said Kathy Kishiqueb, Onigaming’s education director.
