Red Deer Polytechnic opens first Indigenous Student Centre – CFWE

The Red Deer community gathered on Jan. 23 for the grand opening ceremony of Red Deer Polytechnic’s first dedicated Indigenous Student Centre.

The centre is across from the merchandise shop in the main campus, the Pónokaisissáhta centre holds the school’s Indigenous Initiatives Team and a student success coordinator. There is also a student lounge and study space, and a monitor to practice projects or presentations.

Outside of the centre is a fire pit and a teepee. The outdoor amenities can also be used for cultural teachings and ceremonies.

The creation of the Indigenous Student Centre is from the RDP’s Reconcili-Action plan, with its mission and efforts in addressing calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
