Former Batchewana chief consulting with variety of Indigenous leaders ahead of Dec. 6 election
Dean Sayers’ ambition to become the new Assembly of First Nations national chief has sent him on a coast-to-coast tour of the country.
Since announcing his candidacy on Oct. 26, the former Batchewana First Nation chief has been busy travelling all over the Prairies and the West Coast, attempting to gauge the wants and needs of different Indigenous communities in person.
The Sault Star caught up with Sayers this past Thursday as he was getting ready to fly back home to Northeastern Ontario, having spent the last couple weeks meeting with First Nations leaders in British Columbia.
While every nation is different, Sayers told the Star over the phone that the leaders he’s consulted with during his campaign share many priorities, namely a desire to establish a more equitable relationship with their provincial and federal government officials.
