Share Your Feedback on How the Second Generation Cut-Off Impacts You!

Press Release

December 18, 2025

Indigenous Services Canada is asking people and families affected by two issues to share their experiences and thoughts.

The two issues are the “Second-Generation Cut-Off” and “Section 10 Voting Threshold.”

Have these issues affected you or your family?

The Second-Generation Cut-Off is a policy under the Indian Act.

It affects many First Nations people with status.

If someone with status has a child with a non-status partner, their child may not be able to pass on status to their own children.

Section 10 Voting Thresholds are another important issue.

Under this rule, only citizens who meet certain criteria are eligible to vote in Band elections.

This can keep many community members from having a say in decisions that affect them, particularly those who may be excluded by arbitrary thresholds.

If you or your family have been impacted by these policies, your feedback is vital.

It can help inform potential solutions and support efforts to address the consequences of the Second-Generation Cut-Off and Section 10 Voting Thresholds.

You can propose changes or suggest alternatives to these policies based on how they affect you or your Nation.

Your voice matters—please fill out the “Individual Feedback Form for First Nations Rights-Holders” by January 16, 2026.

You can fill it out here: https://forms-formulaires.alpha.canada.ca/en/id/cmah2pec6006lxb016llwjb0k
