November theatre productions explore loss, revenge, cultural storytelling traditions and the upcoming holiday season.
The theatre season has started up again and there are all kinds of shows to see this month. Whether you’re looking for a drama, comedy, musical or something in between, Saskatoon’s theatre companies have you covered.
Saskatoon Summer Players present a production of Fun Home, a retelling of graphic novelist Alison Bechdel’s memoir, adapted by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori.
Bechdel tells the story of her one-of-a-kind, brilliant, volatile father after his unexpected death. Reliving her unique childhood, she explores looming questions about the father she knew as a child and the man she sees through grown-up eyes.
“I love that it captures joy, silliness, comedy in the midst of hardship, sadness, suicide. It has both. Most musical theatre leans into the joy and sprinkles a little tragedy in there. This one leans more into the tragedy but it still asks us as human beings to feel the hard stuff and also see hope within it,” said Bobby Wilson, who plays Bruce Bechdel.
