Press Release
Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - Today, the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, expresses heartfelt condolences to the community, friends and family of Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, after her sudden passing today.
I have known Cathy for many, many years, and she was always one with a smile and a strong welcome for anyone she met. I know from personal experience that she was a consummate professional, a strong communicator and a passionate advocate for her people – she died as she lived, working tirelessly for the causes she cared about. I can personally attest to the quality and strength of her leadership, and the clear pride with which she carried herself. There can be no doubt that the people she worked for were fundamental to her principles. I know that she strongly advocated at the community, provincial and federal level, making remarkable strides as the first female Grand Chief of AMC, as she continued to grow and evolve her strength and her ability to care for her people.
I am proud to have called her a friend. I can say now that I had the good fortune of seeing her last night at an event we both attended. I gave her a hug and wished her well, and said I’d see her soon. She will be sadly missed by many. Our prayers go out to her and her family. I know she’ll be in her new home soon, probably still championing the causes she cared about so deeply.
On behalf of our Cabinet and our Nation, I extend our heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved Cathy. In honour of her contributions and our longstanding friendship, the flags on our buildings will be flying at half mast. Let this be a signal to our First Nations brothers and sisters that the Red River Métis stand in solidarity with them and offer our heartfelt support during this difficult time.
