(Toronto, ON – October 18, 2023) — Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare and The Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs Ontario released the following statement:
“On October 16, 2023, the First Nations Leadership Council and five Ontario Ministers had a productive Leadership Advocacy Strategy Meeting. This quarterly forum provides Chiefs of Ontario with an opportunity to raise key priorities with Ontario leadership. Both the topics, and Ministers in attendance, are identified by First Nations leaders.
These conversations were valuable and pave the way for future collaboration. The discussions were an opportunity to reaffirm the nation-to-nation relationship and make progress on shared priorities that improve the health, social and economic well-being of First Nations peoples across Ontario. We look forward to the next Leadership Advocacy Strategy meeting in early 2024.”
We would like to thank the other leaders involved in the meeting on October 16, including Grand Chief Reg Niganobe (Anishinabek Nation), Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler (Nishnawbe Aski Nation), Proxy Brian Perrault (Treaty #3), Proxy Chief Tim Thompson (Akwesasne), Proxy Diane Maracle (Independent First Nations), Minister Charmaine Williams (Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity), Minister Doug Downey (Ontario’s Attorney General), Minister Michael Kerzner (Ontario’s Solicitor General), and Minister Graydon Smith (Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry).
The Chiefs of Ontario support all First Nations in Ontario as they assert their sovereignty, jurisdiction and their chosen expression of nationhood. Follow Chiefs of Ontario on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram @ChiefsOfOntario.
