Supporting our Indigenous children makes good financial sense – The Georgia Straight

Indigenous children in Canada are over-represented in the child welfare system in every province and territory. In 2016, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada identified this over-representation as a growing crisis in our country. And yet, the problem persists.

In 2019, new federal legislation, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children, youth, and families, prioritized Indigenous jurisdiction over Indigenous children in care. However, the restructuring of child welfare for Indigenous children and youth in our country is an immense undertaking that requires adequate resources and equitable funding.

Against this backdrop, Indigenous communities in Canada are taking important steps to regain control over their children’s welfare. Much can be learned from their experiences and approaches.
