The Nunavut Film Development Corporation (NFDC) is proud to announce the appointment of Lena Ellsworth as the new CEO, the first Inuk woman to lead the corporation. Lena’s appointment comes through a two-year mentorship program funded by the Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation and the Indigenous Screen Office underscoring NFDC’s commitment to leadership development and Indigenous representation in the screen industry.

With over 15 years of service within the Government of Nunavut, Lena is a seasoned administrative professional with extensive experience working alongside executives in various roles. Lena also comes with a background in community outreach and partnership development. understanding the intricate relationships between non-profits and other stakeholders in the territory.

Passionate about preserving Inuit language and culture, Lena had also pursued her filmmaking aspirations, contributing to two films. Both projects provided invaluable hands-on filmmaking experience and appreciation for film production. They also gave her insight into the challenges that Inuit face in having their stories heard and represented accurately. Extensive travels in the three territories have also broadened her understanding of the unique and diverse logistical challenges inherent in these regions.

As the territory’s film industry grows and finds itself in the midst of a deeper interest in circumpolar and Indigenous storytelling, Lena comes at a time when Inuit filmmakers need greater support and opportunities. The Nunavut Film Development Corporation’s board and staff look forward to supporting her and wishes Lena all the very best in this new role!

The Nunavut Film Development Corporation (NFDC) is mandated by the Government of Nunavut to increase economic opportunities for Nunavummiut in the screen-based industry, and to promote Nunavut as a world-class circumpolar production location.

NFDC is a non-profit non-governmental organization governed by a Board of Directors whose expertise shape and direct all activities.

Funding from the Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation and the Indigenous Screen Office will allow NFDC’s new CEO Lena Ellsworth to be mentored by the corporation’s outgoing CEO Huw Eirug.
