We know how to stop cycling deaths
Re: Ontario’s bike lane debate: ‘Sure winner’ in suburbs or ‘blitzkrieg’ on good planning? Sept. 21.
It is grimly fitting that the Citizen’s description of the new provincial push to oppose separated bike lanes as a “sure winner in the suburbs” would be followed by one of the deadliest weeks for active road users in recent Ottawa memory.
Since that headline, and the Ontario transport minister’s subsequent and foolish insistence that cyclist safety is just about “wearing a helmet properly,” two Ottawa cyclists have been killed — one seemingly in a hit-and-run — and a scooter rider seriously injured.
