What’s happening on and off the campaign trail today, plus the news you need to start your day.
A day after U.S. President Donald Trump carried out his pledge to impose sweeping new tariffs on imports from around the world — which, as Canadian Press notes, exempted both Canada and Mexico from a new 10 per cent “baseline tariff,” although a second wave of levies targeting auto imports, as well as steel and aluminum are expected to apply to Canada, while the original 25 per cent blanket tariff initiated earlier this year remains active, although currently on pause — the fallout from what the White House billed as ‘Liberation Day is once again on track to dominate the daily news cycle on the campaign trail as the parties — and their leaders — promote their respective proposals to protect Canada from Trump’s unabashed bid to up-end the global trading ecosystem.
After putting his campaign duties on hold to switch back to prime ministerial mode ahead of yesterday’s tariff reveal, Liberal leader Mark Carney will be back on the leaders’ circuit in Montreal later today, where — along with his Conservative, New Democrat, Bloc Québécois and Green rivals — he’s booked in for a potentially high-stakes appearance on Radio Canada’s Cinq Chefs election special this evening.
