Youth Council Elections 2025

Press Release

March 11, 2025

This is your chance to join the Southern Chiefs’ Organziation (SCO) Youth Council and have a positive impact for our First Nations youth!

The election for the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) Youth Council will take place at the SCO Youth Gathering on March 31, 2025, at the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites.

The vision of the SCO Youth Council is to strengthen the youth voice by empowering, inspiring, and actively engaging with youth from the 32 SCO member First Nations. The Council is dedicated to cultivating relationships, creating meaningful opportunities, and enhancing accessibility to culture, with the overarching goal of positively impacting the next seven generations.

The SCO Youth Council consists of:

  • Two Youth Chiefs who are registered to one of the 32 SCO member Nations
  • Two representatives from the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council
  • Two representatives from the Interlake Reserve Tribal Council
  • Two representatives from the Southeast Resource Development Council Corporation
  • Two representatives from the West Region Tribal Council
  • Two representatives from the independent First Nations (Buffalo Point First Nation, Canupawakpa Dakota Nation, Dakota Plains Wahpeton Nation, and Sagkeeng Anicinabe First Nation)

The SCO Youth Council distinguishes itself by having two Youth Chiefs who play crucial leadership roles, overseeing the Council. Notably, these Youth Chiefs hold a voting position at the SCO Chiefs-in-Summit table, like all other Chiefs in the southern region. This unique opportunity does not exist anywhere else on Turtle Island and serves as a testament to SCO’s unwavering commitment to elevating and honouring the voices and perspectives of youth.
