City and Kwanlin Dun First Nation Leaders Meet

September 26, 2014

WHITEHORSE – An important intergovernmental meeting between the City of Whitehorse and Kwanlin Dün First Nation was held today.

City of Whitehorse Mayor and Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation Chief and Council met in Council Chambers at the First Nation’s Administration Building in McIntyre this morning. Senior officials from both governments were also in attendance.

The intergovernmental forum gives the City and Kwanlin Dün an opportunity to share best practices and information, collaborate on initiatives and discuss issues of mutual interest.

Today’s meeting covered topics such as land development, solid waste management, transit services, recreation programs, and traffic issues.

“Our government recognizes the importance that collaboration and partnerships play in bringing about improvements to infrastructure, services and overall quality of living that benefits not only Kwanlin Dün people, but the greater community as well.” said Chief Doris Bill.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our governments to get together and continue to learn from each other. Citizens of Kwanlin Dün are also Whitehorse citizens. Chief Bill and I recognize that we are much more powerful working together for a common goal,” said Mayor Dan Curtis.

This was the first intergovernmental meeting between the current Councils. The governments have agreed to hold regular meetings every six months. The next meeting will be at City Hall.
