Regulatory action – Order to Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change

June 5, 2015Order to Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate ChangeOn June 5, 2015 the CNSC announced that it had issued an order to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC). The MOECC holds a CNSC licence authorizing the cleanup of the Deloro closed mine site.

The order was issued after an unplanned release of construction wastewater, followed up by a visit from a CNSC inspector to the Deloro closed mine site located in Deloro, Ontario. The CNSC requires the MOECC to immediately cease any remediation activities that may increase environmental risk from cleanup work at the Young’s Creek area project. The company must also immediately develop and implement a contingency plan for the current exigent circumstances – that is, to prevent the release to the local environment of the construction wastewater held onsite.

The CNSC requires these measures to protect the health and safety of workers and the public, as well as the environment.
