LOOKING BACK ON A YEAR OF TRANSFORMATION FOR OPG

Now Ontario’s largest clean power generator

Toronto: As countries gather for the COP21 Climate Conference in Paris, OPG reflects on a transformative year of coal closure, biomass conversions, hydroelectric partnerships and nuclear refurbishment preparations. Today, the company’s power is

99.7 per cent free of smog and greenhouse gas emissions.

“When OPG burned its last piece of coal to make electricity it was the largest single action to combat climate change in North America,” said Jeff Lyash, OPG President and CEO. “Now we’re ready for our next big climate change project — refurbishing Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, which will create enormous economic and environmental benefits along with 30 more years of reliable, low-cost power.”

In 2015, OPG completed converting its Thunder Bay Generating Station from coal to advanced biomass, and the Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Generating Stations went into service. The Lower Mattagami project, a unique partnership between the Moose Cree First Nation and OPG, has added 438 MWs of GHG-free electricity. The biomass conversions of Thunder Bay and Atikokan generating stations in Northwestern Ontario created new opportunities for the forestry industry while protecting local well-paying jobs.

Also in 2015, OPG partnered with Taykwa Tagamou Nation to start construction on a new $300-million, 28-MW hydroelectric generating station north of Smooth Rock Falls.

“OPG’s transformation into the province’s leading clean power generator is a great environmental story,” added Lyash. “It’s also a story of partnerships and a company that cares about Ontario’s communities. We’re proud to be part of the fight against climate change.”
