QNW: Decision of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal favours First Nations Children

Press Release

Kahnawake, January 26 2016 – Quebec Native Women (QNW) applauds the Canadian Human Rights Tribunals’ decision rendered this morning in favor of putting an end to inequalities against First Nations children. In February 2007, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) and the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada (FNCFCSC) filed a complaint accusing the federal government of discrimination against First Nations children by imposing unfair funding policies for child protection services.

This long-awaited decision will allow 163,000 First Nations children affected by this situation to be entitled to adequate resources for their needs. “It took nearly 10 years of legal battle for our children to receive fair treatment as other Canadian children and today we can finally celebrate this victory” said QNW’s president, Viviane Michel.

Moreover, to ensure First Nations receive culturally appropriate services, the ruling calls for a redesign of the child welfare system and it also states that the government must cease all discriminatory practices and take measures to prevent it. “This decision will have a direct impact on the health and well-being of children living in Aboriginal communities and also for future generations,” added QNW’s president.
