Pic Mobert First Nation: Development of a Community Constitution

Press Release

April 14, 2016

Chief and Council have initiated the development of a community constitution for the Pic Mobert First Nation as an important priority. The council has identified a target date of August 1st, 2016 to ratify the community constitution.

A constitution is the fundamental law of a nation, which may be written or unwritten. Among other things, a constitution creates, empowers and regulates government, it sets out the basic principles government must conform to and the rights of the citizens of the nation in the context of establishing the extent and manner of the exercise of sovereign powers.

In addition to supporting our vision of nation and self-governance, the constitution will allow us to participate in the Anishinabek Nation’s (Union of Ontario Indians) restoration of jurisdiction over education process, which would allow Pic Mobert to vote on the new Anishinabek Education System to be held in November, 2016.  Pic Mobert cannot opt into the Anishinabek Education System without developing and ratifying our own constitution.

Read the supporting document from Anishinabek Nation about the benefits and options for a constitution.
