Kash evacuees arriving in Kapuskasing – The Cornwall Standard

KASHECHEWAN – With potential for flooding and the dyke system surrounding Kashechewan First Nations being assessed as ineffective, residents from that reserve are being evacuated to Kapuskasing as a precautionary measure.

A state of emergency was declared for Kashechewan on April 27, due to the ice breakup and potential for flooding. The community requested the precautionary evacuation.

There are approximately 728 “Stage 1” evacuees and 479 “Stage 2” evacuees in the community.

“Stage 1” residents include vulnerable residents, families with young children, the elderly and people with mobility or health issues.
