THE POSITION
Under the daily supervision of the Justice Coordinator and the general direction of the Director of Justice, the Justice Worker is responsible for the delivery of services for youth that are referred to the STC Justice Extrajudicial Sanctions/Measures and/or Community Reintegration programs. The incumbent can expect to be assigned to either program, dependent on the operational needs of the justice program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the activities and functions of an assigned caseload of youth;
- Promote and provide extrajudicial measures/sanctions in the form of community justice forums, victim-offender mediation and accountability conferences;
- Assist in the successful reintegration of youth to the community by attaching them to sustainable kinship and community resources;
- Provide mentorship, guidance and support to assigned youth and serve as a positive role model in the community for all youth;
- Engage youth, their family, their victims and other community members in restoring harmony and promote healing in a culturally sensitive manner;
- Provide progress reports to the Ministry of Justice – Corrections and Policing, Crown Prosecutors, Police, Lawyers, Judges and other applicable justice personnel when required;
- Participate in justice programming , training and other Saskatoon Tribal Council events as assigned;
- Develop community and kinship resources to assist youth in completing their extrajudicial agreements and/or reintegration mentorship plans;
- Use a holistic kinship model in the delivery of services to youth and their family members;
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, Corrections and Policing workers and other community agencies staff;
- Assist in development and evaluation of yearly work plans and activity reports;
- Operate under the STC First Nations Services Justice programs operations and procedures manual;
- Operate in accordance to the Youth Criminal Justice Act and the Saskatchewan Justice Alternative Measures policies;
- Complete accurate records of referrals, activities, outcomes and statistical information in the reporting format prescribed by the funding agency and STC Justice Programs.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of information concerning the victim and offender that is consistent with the standards of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Human Justice, Sociology or Social Work degree or Youth Care diploma with related youth justice work experience;
- Knowledge of adolescent development;
- Knowledge of current challenges youth must contend with;
- Knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and provincial youth court process;
- Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and traditions;
- Knowledge of community resources within the city of Saskatoon;
- Ability to advocate for youth and their families;
- Experience working with youth ages 12-24 years old;
- Effective presentation and/or public speaking skills;
- Ability to prepare written reports;
- Basic computer skills including familiarity of MS Office and the internet;
- The following training will be considered assets: Victim-Offender Mediation, Community Justice Forum, Suicide Intervention, First Aid, Critical Incident Debriefing, and Life Skills.
- Valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License; Saskatchewan Driver’s Abstract is required
- Current Criminal Records Check (CPIC) and a Community Resources Child Abuse Check must be available at the time of interview
