Students and staff from Rainbow District School Board and the Wabnode Centre for Aboriginal Services at Cambrian College have joined together to host the Attawapiskat Walk for Awareness on Saturday, May 28, 2016.

The walk will begin at Sudbury Secondary School at 10 a.m. and will end at Bell Park with a round dance around noon. Everyone is welcome to participate in support of the youth and community of Attawapiskat.

The idea for the walk came from a young person who was concerned about the many suicide attempts occurring in the community of Attawapiskat.

The walk will give students and community members an opportunity to show their support for the youth from Attawapiskat. The theme of the walk is Youth for Youth (Y4Y).

Nineteen young people from Attawapiskat will be walking as honoured guests.

First Nation participants are encouraged to bring their drums and, to honour the connection to the land, women are encouraged to wear their long skirts.

Water will be provided for walkers and the concession stand at Bell Park will be open to purchase food.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can contact the Dreamcatcher Charitable Foundation at www.dcfund.ca or can call 1-866-508-6795. All proceeds will go directly to Attawapiskat First Nation.

Anyone wishing to volunteer on that day can call Andrea Bennett at 705-282-7282 or Sherry-Lee Auger at 705-674-7551, ext. 6821.
