Press Release
June 30th, 2016
The Ontario Government announced a $72 million dollar investment in a four pillar, cross government strategy to Ending Human Trafficking in Ontario. The four pillars include:
“Human trafficking is a deplorable crime and human rights violation that robs the safety, livelihood and dignity of those who are being exploited and abused. We are committed to keeping women – and all Ontarians – safe. The release of this strategy reinforces our continued dedication to this cause.”
UNDRIP Article 22.2 reads “States shall take measures, in conjunction with indigenous peoples, to ensure that indigenous women and children enjoy the full protection and guarantees against all forms of violence and discrimination.”
ONWA’s Executive Director Cora McGuire-Cyrette has been working hard to draw attention to the issue of sex trafficking of Indigenous women and girls in the province
and to raise awareness that Indigenous women are drastically overrepresented within Canada’s human trafficking, and as victims of human trafficking within Canadian borders. “We’re pleased with the announcement made today. It’s a step in the right direction towards creating equality for Indigenous Women” Cora McGuire-Cyrette, Executive Director ONWA
The Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) aims to end violence against Indigenous Women and their families. ONWA’s report on Sex Trafficking of Indigenous Women in Ontario understands the root causes of violence against Indigenous Women are systemic, rooted in structural and social inequalities and the ongoing and historical processes of colonization. Ending trafficking is essential to the overall eradication of violence against Indigenous women and girls.
ONWA is committed to collaborate efforts in research, policy and programming to address the issue of sex trafficking.
Cora McGuire-Cyrette will be available for interview by phone.
