Press Release
Moose Factory, ON – February 16, 2017
On behalf of the Council and the Membership of the Moose Cree First Nation [MCFN], I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family of World War II Veteran Jack Wynne. He was the last surviving veteran from Moose Factory and a very well-respected Elder of MCFN.
Jack passed away peacefully at the Weeneebayko General Hospital on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the age of 91. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many friends he had in Moose Factory/Moosonee and the surrounding communities.
At the young age of eighteen (18) years old, Jack voluntarily signed up to serve in the Canadian Military. He was accepted for active duty and served in England, the Netherlands, and Germany until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1946. Jack served as a bombardier in the Royal Canadian Artillery, 1st Canadian Corps before transferring into the infantry with the Royal Montreal Regiment and then the Irish Regiment of Canada.
Jack was a friend to many and was known for his humility, kindness and friendly personality. He will be sadly missed by the community of MCFN and we share the loss and grief with his family and friends during this difficult time.
Our prayers and thoughts will continue to be with the family and we ask our Creator to give them the strength they will need in the days ahead.
Meegwetch,
Chief Patricia Faries
