Message of Condolence – Dwight Dorey

Press Release

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, May 24, 2018 – NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) President Todd Russell today expressed deep sadness on behalf of himself and all Southern Inuit of NunatuKavut in Labrador on the passing of Dwight Dorey, a beloved friend and leader. He issued the following message of condolence:

“I met Dwight nearly 25 years ago when I first became involved in politics, and I recall such a warm welcome. Dwight’s determination to ensure all Indigenous peoples’ rights were recognized and that all were treated with dignity and equality was evident from the beginning. Since the early 1970s, he saw the tremendous need and plight of the most disadvantaged of all Canadian citizens – the Metis, the Non-Status and, for us in Labrador, the un-recognized Inuit.

Dwight led the Nova Scotia Native Council and then served as both Vice-President and National Chief of the Native Council of Canada and Congress of Aboriginal Peoples. He steered us all through stormy times on the Aboriginal rights front. He was also a quiet and patient counsel for those of us who, like myself, were new to Aboriginal politics on the national stage. Throughout his life, Dwight met tremendous challenges head on and always saw an opportunity to advance the interests of Indigenous peoples.

Dwight was greatly acknowledged in our territory and was an ardent supporter of the Southern Inuit, having visited our communities on many occasions. He was an individual who accomplished much. He earned a master’s degree in his later years, published several books, and sat at the constitutional tables of the 1980s and early 1990s with multiple successes to his credit. Dwight Dorey was a true leader and example to all Indigenous peoples.

Dwight Dorey was also known for his “Grassroots Tours” during his era in national leadership. He was a man of his people and understood intimately the feelings of the people. He was also a story teller, a singer and a musician. He could perform a Hank Williams song like no other, as many well remember.

Our condolences go out to Dwight’s family, whom he so loved so dearly, and the vast circle of friends and colleagues who joined him on his life’s journey.”
