Provinces funds free activities in celebration of B.C. families

VICTORIA – Recreation facilities, art galleries, museums and Indigenous organizations are hosting free events this Family Day long weekend, including ice skating, swimming and other activities, thanks to support from the Province.

“B.C. Family Day is a chance to take a break and spend time making memories with your family,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture. “We understand what this day means to British Columbians. That’s why we have invested more funding this year, so that everyone has the opportunity to take part in free community activities with their loved ones.”

This year’s Family Day takes place on Feb. 18, 2019.

Quick Facts:

• In 2018, a decision was made to change Family Day from the second to the third Monday in February to align with the other provinces in Canada. That move takes effect this year.
• For 2019, the Government of B.C. has provided $350,000, an increase of $100,000 over last year.
• Funding was provided to BC Recreation and Parks Association ($250,000) and the BC Museums Association ($50,000) for the administration of Family Day grants on behalf of the Province. This funding supports grants of up to $1,000 for various community-based organizations throughout B.C. to support free events.
• In addition, the Province provided funding to the Royal BC Museum ($40,000) and the Vancouver Art Gallery ($10,000) to support the cost of hosting free activities.
