Call for Submissions: Indigenous Music Residency 2020 – Deadline: Dec 12

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 3PM CST, Thursday, December 12, 2019

The Indigenous Music Residency (IMR) provides up to 20 First Nation, Metis, and Inuit recording artists from any part of Canada with five full days of advice, feedback, direction, and inspiration from a handful of leading industry professionals. Set for February 22 – February 26 (with travel days being February 21 & 27), 2020 at the Elkhorn Resort in Central Manitoba—the project is led by Manitoba Music in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts.

Programming:
While discussions about touring and marketing are mainstays each year, applicants will need to identify their priorities for the week in the application form so other sessions can be planned accordingly.

A typical day at the Indigenous Music Residency includes about 10 hours of programming beginning at 9AM with time set aside for meals and an afternoon break.

Each participant will be required to perform at least two songs for feedback and advice from mentors during performance coaching sessions on the first four evenings.

All discussions and print-outs will be in English.

Eligibility:
The Indigenous Music Residency is open to First Nation, Metis, and Inuit musicians residing in Canada. All participants must be 18-years-of-age or older.

For the purposes of this project, First Nation, Metis, and Inuit musicians are defined as follows:

• Singers, singer/songwriters, emcees, musicians, and beat makers/music producers who identify as First Nation, Metis, or Inuit.
• Individuals who have performed at least 10 times in the last 12 months (including paid and unpaid performances)
• Individuals who have released one album or EP in the past four years or have plans to release a second album or EP in the next 12 months

Transportation & Accommodations:
Invited artists will be provided accommodations, three meals per day along with snack and coffee breaks, as well as transportation between Winnipeg and the Elkhorn Resort. Participants from outside of Manitoba will also receive round-trip economy flights and ground transportation in Winnipeg.

Registration Fee:
If you are invited to attend the Indigenous Music Residency, you will be required to pay a registration fee of $300 by December 30, 2019\0. A reduced rate of $200 is available to members of Provincial or Territorial music industry associations like Manitoba Music (residents of Nunavut and Quebec may qualify for the discount if they are members of a national music industry association).

Selection Process:
Each application will be adjudicated by a jury of music industry professionals. The jury will review the information that you submit along with your website and social media profiles.

Applications will be evaluated based on:

• Strong vocals and/or interesting lyrics if you’re a singer, singer/songwriter, or emcee
• Solid musicianship and/or a demand for your services if you’re a musician or beat maker/music producer
• Momentum, demonstrated by touring, media coverage, nominations and awards, and social media following

The jury will be relying on your website to provide the following (if you’re using a social media page as a website, please make sure it includes everything):

• A biography that highlights your momentum, experience, and accomplishments
• Performance history
• Easy access to all your social media profiles
• Easy access to your music and videos
• At least one professional promotional photo available for download
