Back to election watch already: The Liberal government is rejecting the prospect of setting up an anti-corruption committee to dig into the WE scandal (and others), saying it could trigger a confidence vote — threatening to send Canadians to the polls during a pandemic.
What the parties are saying:
- Liberal House Leader Pablo Rodriguez: “The Conservatives’ motion that is there on the table, if it was to be debated, would send a clear message that there is no confidence in the government.”
- Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre: “Setting up a committee is not a matter of confidence … No government in Canadian history has been brought down because an opposition motion passed to set up a committee.”
- NDP MP Charlie Angus: “We go from the dumbest scandal to the dumbest response ever.”
