Indigenous education in North must continue – Sudbury Star

Note: This is an open letter to Reverend Doctor John Meehan, president of the University of Sudbury.

In response to the devastating local impact of Laurentian University’s restructuring through the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act in the past months, representatives of Save our Sudbury, the Coalition nord-ontarienne pour une universite de langue francaise a Sudbury, and key leaders of our local Indigenous communities formed the Tricultural Committee for University Education at Sudbury and have started a tricultural conversation to build bridges and demonstrate support for the other communities impacted by the cuts at Laurentian.

These groups emerged in response to the recent decisions by Laurentian University that have resulted, directly or indirectly, in the closures and reductions of a number of important university programs, endangering in the process the long-standing program of Indigenous studies — one of the oldest such programs in Canada — offered by the University of Sudbury.
