Congratulations!

Garden River First Nation is taking this opportunity to recognize and congratulate all the young athletes that recently participated in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships from May 6-12, 2024. This event provided a platform for provinces and territories to showcase their top level First Nation, Metis, and Inuit youth hockey athletes ages 13-18 years. These athletes are often introduced to each other for the first time, are expected to gel as a team and engage in high level hockey games hoping to attain success in the form of a medal.

At this time the leadership is acknowledging two athletes attached to Garden River First Nation. Both these athletes participated in this tournament last year and brought a medal home. They not only showcase Ontario but their home community as well. Furthermore, there are a number of former hockey athletes and coaches of Garden River who have participated and to those individuals miigwetch!

With this letter a shout out, congratulations and kudos go out to gold medal recipients Deven Jones- McDonald who played with Team Ontario Male and Grade Cadeau who played with Team Ontario Female. Both these athletes had participated the year prior and added value as returning players. Another athlete whose mother works within the nation, Haylee Lecuyer, a member of the Michipicoten First Nation played for Team Ontario Female. Athletes Evan Roach and Sara Boston from Batchewana participated for the second time with Team Ontario. Needless to say, we had strong representation at this prestigious hockey championship.

I would be remiss in not acknowledging the parents and support persons of these athletes. I am using this letter to provide that platform and space and thank those adults who have provided the athletes opportunity for success. Countless hours of dedication by you have opened opportunity for those athletes to achieve their highest potential.

In closing I encourage everyone to strive toward a healthy spirit and body. Sports opens the door for all ages to stay active and fulfill a satisfying lifestyle. It also affords longevity and opportunity to share enthusiasm in a sport of your choice.
