The Akwesasne Justice Department (AJD) OSC plays a crucial role in drafting legislation that protects and advances the inherent rights of the Mohawks of Akwesasne, guided by principles of peace, respect, and fairness. The committee, which consists of AJD Portfolio Chiefs and one Community representative from each of the three districts, is providing this brief update on the group’s efforts and ongoing initiatives.
The Committee plays a key role in overseeing and incorporating input from both Council and the community. It provides guidance and direction in the development of Akwesasne Laws, while carefully considering and balancing the diverse perspectives within the Akwesasne community. Currently, several laws are being drafted, amended, or newly developed by various Working Task Groups (WTGs). All of these are in Phase I of the Akwesasne Legislative Enactment Procedural Regulations (ALEPR) and include:
