June 21, 2025 is National Indigenous Peoples Day

Press Release

Jun 16, 2025

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day that offers opportunities to learn more about Indigenous peoples in Canada and increase our knowledge and understanding. This important day takes place on the summer solstice, which holds cultural significance for many.

Here are some easy ways to engage in and celebrate Indigenous culture and traditions, with some ideas taking place right here in West Vancouver:

  • The District has organized its annual family-friendly celebration at Ambleside Park on June 21. It will feature cultural sharing through art, music, storytelling, and dance, with Canoe Families and activities on the beach, live music in the evening featuring Squamish Nation performers, and a salmon dinner cooked over an open fire by Wilfred Baker. • The West Vancouver Memorial Library has many offerings to highlight and honour Indigenous History Month, including storytelling and matinee film screenings. Find out more here: Indigenous History Month at the Library – West Vancouver Memorial Library
  • Learn more about the upcoming Squamish Nation Youth Powwow at squamishnationyouthpowwow.com
  • Take the opportunity to read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action. This is a great way to learn more. Read the Calls to Action.
  • Wear a moose hide pin as part of the Moose Hide Campaign. This is an ongoing movement meant to create conversation. Learn more about the Moose Hide Campaign here: The Moose Hide Campaign – Moose Hide Campaign
