Indigenous-led job fair brings avenues of career options to First Nations teens – CBC

7 First Nations across southwestern Ontario organized annual Aboriginal Youth Career Awareness Fair

Sage Foulds Hill, 15, said she almost gave up on her dream of becoming a police officer because she is colour blind, a condition that prevents her from qualifying for the profession.

But a career fair on Thursday introduced the Indigenous teen to a host of alternative careers in law enforcement, such as the Canadian Coast Guard or the Canada Border Services Agency. It’s also an opportunity for Foulds Hill to bridge the historically strained relationship between Indigenous groups and law enforcement.

“You get to do similar things as the police would and keep the community safe. I didn’t know this was an option until I talked to them,” said Foulds Hill, a member of the Oneida Nation of the Thames. “It’s amazing to learn that I had a job in the market that I would enjoy .”
