FORT McMURRAY— The Alberta RCMP hosted its third annual Elders’ Luncheon in the Wood Buffalo region, bringing together Elders from Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, Fort McKay First Nation and Métis, Fort McMurray First Nation and Métis, Gregoire Lake First Nation #468, Janvier First Nation, Willow Lake Métis and other visiting Nations.
Led by Wood Buffalo Detachment Commander Chief Supt. Mark Hancock, the luncheon created space for open dialogue, storytelling and reflection. The event aimed to strengthen relationships between the RCMP and Indigenous communities through shared understanding and respect.
The gathering began with a prayer and smudge, giving attendees a moment to reflect. Elders shared lived experiences, including memories from residential schools, while RCMP members listened as part of ongoing reconciliation efforts.
