Nunatsiavut Government concerned with complaints regarding reproductive health services

Press Release

December 4, 2025

The Nunatsiavut Government is deeply concerned by complaints that have been raised by patients and families regarding reproductive health services at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

“The health and safety of patients is our highest priority,” says Nunatsiavut First Minister and (Acting) Health and Social Development Minister Melva Williams. “We are committed to ensuring that these concerns are addressed through the proper channels. Patient trust in the health system is essential, and as a government we will continue to work to uphold that trust. We all deserve respectful, safe, and appropriate care.”

The Nunatsiavut Government acknowledges the courage it takes for patients and families to come forward with their experiences, and is encouraging anyone with concerns about their care to use the formal complaint process so that issues can be properly investigated and addressed.

“We are committed to listening to the voices of patients and families, and to working with Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services to ensure that the health care system in Labrador is safe, responsive, and accountable,” notes the Minister. “We have been in discussions with Health and Community Services Minister Lela Evans, who has provided assurances that she is committed to addressing the issues raised by patients, and emphasized her commitment to putting measures in place to ensure that all patients are provided appropriate reproductive health services in a safe and caring environment, allowing for optimal health outcomes.”

The Nunatsiavut Government will continue to work closely with NL Health Services to ensure accountability and improvements in reproductive healthcare services, and to advocate for the health and wellbeing of all Labrador Inuit and residents.
