Nunatsiavut Elections Act amended

Press Release

February 2, 2026

The Nunatsiavut Assembly recently passed amendments to the Nunatsiavut Elections Act that will allow for greater accessibility for Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement in the Constituency of Canada to exercise their right to vote.

The amendments permit the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer (NEO) the option of implementing a hybrid system of voting in the Constituency of Canada to complement the existing mail-in ballot system. The goal will be to reduce difficulties with delay times in sending and receiving mail ballots, while maintaining safeguards against duplicate voting. This is the only constituency in which all voters have to vote remotely, without polling stations.

The amendments to the Act do not automatically implement electronic voting; rather, it will be up to the NEO to determine when and by what type of system electronic voting could be used.

“These changes reaffirm the Constitutional right of every Beneficiary to have a say in our elections and help decide the direction of our government through choosing its leadership,” said the Speaker of the Assembly, Bryan Winters. “By allowing the NEO the ability to implement electronic voting for voters in the Canadian Constituency, we are ensuring Beneficiaries will have their vote counted, no matter where they live and without reliance on the mail system.”
