Nunavut emergency management (NEM) is advising residents that Operation Nanook, the Canadian Armed Forces’ annual northern training, is underway in several Nunavut communities until March 13, 2026.
During this period, elements of Joint Task Force (North) will establish a temporary headquarters at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station and utilize designated locations in and around Cambridge Bay.
Military and Canadian Ranger presence are also expected in Arviat, Chesterfield Inlet, Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk, Naujaat, Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove.
Activities may include:
Residents may observe a temporary increase in aircraft activity and limited noise in designated training areas. All activities will occur in controlled locations.
These activities are routine and are intended to strengthen coordination, build partnerships and maintain readiness in Arctic environments.
