Yukon government affirms commitment to community safety with initiatives in Budget 2026

The Yukon government has heard from Yukoners that community safety is a top priority. Budget 2026 will include funding for the RCMP to increase policing resources and help improve infrastructure to support public safety across the territory. The budget, which is subject to legislative approval, would include:

• Over $3 million for 10 RCMP positions in Whitehorse and communities for policing, support personnel and specialized teams;
• $1 million to support operations and for equipment;
• Over $3 million to renovate and maintain RCMP infrastructure; and
• An additional $200,000 to support Yukon First Nations with community safety planning.

These investments support the Yukon government’s mandate to address organized crime across the territory, and provide policing resources where they are needed most. These investments will bolster community engagement and overall operational capacity in Whitehorse and in Yukon communities.

I have been hearing from Yukoners that they are concerned about safety in their neighbourhoods. Our government is focused on providing the resources needed to support effective community safety efforts, so Yukoners can feel safe where they live and raise their families. We will continue to prioritize strong, responsive and effective policing and we reaffirm our commitment to Yukoners that public safety is a top priority.

• Territorial RCMP policing services in the Yukon are cost-shared between the Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada.
  • Under the Territorial Police Service Agreement, the Government of Canada funds 30 per cent of core policing costs and the Government of Yukon covers 70 per cent.
  • Under the First Nations and Inuit Policing Program, the Government of Canada funds 52 per cent of the costs and the Government of Yukon contributes 48 per cent.
