Manitoba Government Mourns Passing of MLA Amanda Lathlin

Press Release

March 23, 2026

On behalf of the Manitoba government, Premier Wab Kinew today extended his condolences to the family, friends and community of Amanda Lathlin, the first First Nations woman elected to the Manitoba legislature and MLA for The Pas–Kameesak.

“I am deeply saddened to share that Amanda Lathlin has begun her final journey,” said Kinew. “When she won the 2015 byelection, she made history. Though Indigenous women have been leaders since time immemorial, Amanda became the first to serve in our provincial legislature. The barrier she broke helped open the door for other Indigenous women to serve as MLAs and ministers and it contributed to my own path to becoming premier.”

Lathlin was a strong and unique voice for northern Manitoba, The Pas, and her home community of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, where she had previously served as a councillor. Known for her warmth, humour and deep connection to her constituents, she was widely recognized as a natural politician.

Among her many contributions, Lathlin championed legislation to strengthen services for sexual assault survivors in the north and to secure compassionate leave for those who experience miscarriage. She also fought to establish Oscar’s Place, a homeless shelter in The Pas named after her late father, Oscar Lathlin, a former NDP cabinet minister.

Lathlin carried her Cree identity proudly, incorporating the Cree language into her remarks in the legislature during her time in opposition, the premier noted.

“Amanda and I shared a relationship like no other,” said Kinew. “We supported one another through many challenges and through it all she remained honest, funny and unfiltered. She became like a sister to me. Above all, she was a devoted mother and, recently, a proud new grandmother. She loved her family deeply.”

The premier extended prayers to Lathlin’s loved ones in The Pas, Opaskwayak Cree Nation and across Manitoba, and to all who were touched by her leadership and friendship.

“Kinanâskomitin, Amanda, for everything you have done for Manitoba,” said Kinew. “Your girls are healthy and strong. Tell Oscar we miss him too.”

The flags outside the Legislative Building have been lowered to half-mast in memoriam, the premier noted. Additionally, a book of condolences has been placed at the base of the Grand Staircase. Visitors will be able to sign the book for the next two weeks between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and then the book will be gifted to the family.
