Press Release
(March 25, 2026 – Nuuk, Greenland) The Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) Board of Directors is meeting this week in Nuuk, Greenland, at a time when nations around the globe are expressing heightened interested in a warming Arctic.
”It is important that Inuit continue to demonstrate strong unity across Inuit Nunaat. The Arctic is not a commodity. It is not a shipping route, a mine, or a fish quota. The Arctic is and always will be our homeland.” said NTI President, Paul Irngaut.
Following up an update from the NTI Investment Advisory Committee Report, the Board passed several financial resolutions.
A financial contribution of $100,000 was approved to establish the Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council in Canada which will be occupied by an Inuk from Canada following the General Assembly in Iqaluit in July 2026.
“Hosting the Office of the Chair in Canada presents a significant leadership opportunity for Canadian Inuit during a period of major global and Arctic policy shifts. Supporting the Office aligns with NTI’s intergovernmental, advocacy, and international priorities by reinforcing Inuit self‑determination and strengthening NTI’s presence in circumpolar decision‑making” said Acting NTI Vice President, Adamee Itorcheak.
The Board approved a 20% increase to the Nunavut Harvesters Support Program Budget for a total of $2,409,221. The NHSP is an initiative designed to support Inuit in Nunavut by providing financial assistance for traditional harvesting activities. It helps reduce poverty and preserves Inuit culture by funding equipment (small and large), safety gear, and community hunts for Inuit enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement and is administered by the Regional Inuit Associations on behalf of NTI.
Finally, the board approved the expansion of the Uqqujjait Innarnut pension program to admit an additional 690 Inuit elders registered under the Nunavut Agreement, born between 1 January 1959 and 31 December 1961, effective April 1, 2026. Additionally, the monthly benefit will be increased to $250 per month with the monthly benefit increasing by the Cost of Living allowance (COLA) each year.
