FREDERICTON – The provincial government is welcoming a new federal investment of more than $81 million to help stabilize and rebuild wild Atlantic salmon populations through habitat restoration, monitoring and partnerships.
The funding will support restoration efforts across New Brunswick, improving Atlantic salmon habitat while collaborating with Indigenous communities and stewardship organizations.
“This is a positive step forward for the protection and recovery of wild Atlantic salmon,” said Natural Resources Minister John Herron. “We are pleased to see the federal government making this important investment. Every effort contributes to safeguarding this iconic species, and as minister, I have consistently advocated for stronger protection and restoration measures.”
The investment aligns with the federal government’s recently launched strategy to conserve and rebuild wild Atlantic salmon populations, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing ongoing environmental pressures and population decline.
Herron said wild Atlantic salmon are an important part of New Brunswick’s natural heritage and play a key role in the province’s ecosystems and cultural identity.
“This funding will help strengthen partnerships and advance on-the-groundwork that is critical to restoring salmon habitat and improving monitoring efforts,” said Herron.
The provincial government will continue to collaborate with the federal government, Indigenous communities and local organizations to ensure co-ordinated and effective implementation of restoration initiatives while supporting the long-term recovery of wild Atlantic salmon.
