Iqaluit, Nunavut – April 8, 2026 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) expresses its sincere condolences to the family, friends and collogues of Louis Tapardjuk. As the former Community Director for Igloolik, he was also a lifelong advocate for Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, language and governance.
Louis Tapardjuk dedicated his life to public service and to strengthening Inuit identity. He served as Mayor of Igloolik, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Amittuq, and Minister of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth. In each of these roles, he worked tirelessly to preserve and promote the Inuit way of life, language and cultural knowledge.
Louis also served Inuit through nine terms with the QIA, including during its time as the Baffin Regional Inuit Association (BRIA), and held two terms as President in the 1980s. His longstanding leadership reflects a deep and enduring commitment to representing Inuit and advancing Inuit interests.
He was instrumental in advancing Inuit language rights, contributing to the development and passage of the Nunavut Official Languages Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act. He also played a key role in preserving Inuit knowledge through the Igloolik Oral History Project, conducting extensive interviews with Elders and ensuring that important cultural knowledge is carried forward.
At the time of his passing, Louis served as Chair of the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit (Inuit Language Authority), reflecting his lifelong commitment to Inuit identity and cultural continuity.
“Louis Tapardjuk was a respected and influential leader whose work had a lasting impact on Inuit across Nunavut,” said Olayuk Akesuk, President of QIA. “He was deeply committed to his community, culture, and language, and his legacy will continue to guide future generations.”
