Statement on the Passing of Carol Tobicoe, the first woman on MCFN Council

Press Release

April 8, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Chief and Council announce the passing of former Councillor and respected community member Carol Tobicoe.

Carol Tobicoe will be remembered as a trailblazer within our Nation, as the first woman ever elected to Council. First elected in 1977, she served for ten years, helping to open the door for women in leadership and setting an example of strength, dedication, and service to community.

Her commitment to the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation extended far beyond her time in office. Since 1987, Carol played an important role in the success of the Annual Three

Fires Homecoming Pow Wow, giving her time and energy year after year to support one of our most important cultural gatherings. She also contributed to many other community events, always showing up with a willingness to help and a deep care for her people.

In 2021 Carole received MCFN’s “Community Volunteer Award,” one of the Eagle Awards MCFN offers. Carol continued her work with the MCFN Culture Committee, where she supported the preservation of our history, language, and traditions. Her lifelong dedication reflects the values of giving back and carrying culture forward for future generations.

She followed in a strong family legacy of leadership, as the daughter of former Chief Fred King, and her husband Clayton, who also served on Council. Together, their contributions helped shape our community in meaningful ways.

On behalf of Chief Margaret Sault and Council, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. We honour Carol Tobicoe for her leadership, her generosity, and the lasting impact she leaves on our Nation.

Baamaapii Carol. Chief Margaret Sault
