Indigenous people 8 times more likely to be incarcerated than others in N.L., says study
The findings of a new study into the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador’s correctional facilities are not a surprise, says a representative of the Nunatsiavut Government.
Last month St. John’s-based non-profit First Light released a new report that indicates Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador are incarcerated at a rate eight times higher than their non-Indigenous counterparts.
“I find it’s very concerning, but it’s also not new news to us,” Nunatsiavut Government regional justice services manager Erin Broomfield told CBC Radio’s Labrador Morning.
