John Borrows, professor and inaugural Loveland Chair in Indigenous Law in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law, has received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Indigenous Studies for 2026.
The 101st class of Guggenheim Fellows, announced by the Board of Trustees of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, comprises 223 distinguished individuals working across 55 disciplines.
Borrows, who is Anishinaabe/Ojibway and a member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation, is renowned for his research focusing on the revitalization of Indigenous Peoples’ laws and their relationship to Canadian constitutional law, Canadian Aboriginal rights law and environmental law. His writings on Indigenous legal rights have been recognized with numerous awards.
