The new space allows community to cure hides, dry meat and pass on traditional skills year-round
Doig River First Nation celebrated the grand opening of its new cultural experiences centre this week, following the addition of new housing, a prayer house, a school and daycare program.
It’s the latest development for the community, home to around 130 people, located roughly an hour drive northeast of Fort St John, B.C.
The space is called Aẕís Kwą̂, meaning “Hide House” in Dane-ẕaa Ẕáágéʔ (the Dane-zaa language). It will be used for butchering and drying meat, curing hides and passing on traditional skills like drum making.
